Caring For Our Own - Health Care in SK
Saskatchewan 1905-2005 Guide For Teachers

Sock, onion, mustard powder, garlic, photo of iron lung, mortar and pestleOverview: Students will understand that advances in technology and medical knowledge, improved transportation and all weather-roads, free medical care, and a host of other factors have contributed to improving health care for the people of Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan's leadership role in the path to Medicare will be highlighted. In the in-museum Discovery Box program, they will look at how early Saskatchewan residents responded to medical situations. The in-classroom lesson plans compare medical care of the past with that of contemporary Saskatchewan and discuss the technology and knowledge that have contributed to the care we receive today.

Christmas of the Past

This Christmas program for children in kindergarten to grade six is offered during the month of December.  A series of activities are offered to show how Christmas was once celebrated.

Load of Nonsense

Overview: The program is a teacher-led artifact game of truth or lie with an immigration theme. Load Of Nonsense places students in the role of early settlers, who work together as immigrants on a journey to reach Saskatchewan.
Grades: Grade 4 Social Studies IN4.2; DR4.1 (Also Grades 3-8)
Time Needed: 2 hours

A Place to Call Home - Immigration to SK
Saskatchewan 1905-2005 Guide For Teachers

Chart with photos and vocabulary words relating to 5 child immigrants to SaskatchewanOverview: Students will learn about immigration and relocation Saskatchewan from the perspectives of children representing different time periods and cultures. Through in-classroom lesson plans, students will investigate the ethnic origins of people in their community as well as the emotional aspects of immigrating to a new country, both positive and negative. In the in-museum Discovery Box program, students will learn about the journeys of fictional immigrants and the special possessions they brought with them to Saskatchewan.

When the Lights Came On - Rural Electrification in SK
Saskatchewan 1905-2005 Guide For Teachers

Candles, a model gas stove, a toaster, and other items from the WDM Rural Electrification programOverview: Students will explore what farm life was like before the rural electrification program brought power to Saskatchewan's farms in the 1950s. The effects of rural electrification on the lives of farm families and surrounding communities will be considered through hands-on interaction with artifacts in the in-museum Discovery Box program and through stories and writing assignments contained in the in-classroom lesson plans.
