Museum Days
Overview:
Come learn, live and celebrate Saskatchewan's heritage at Museum
Days. Museum Day will bring the museum alive, inside and out, with
demonstrations, interpretations, displays and activities. Students,
accompanied by a chaperone/teacher, may try their hand at different
“old-time” activities, including making a rope, turning wheat into flour,
writing with a nib pen and ink, washing clothes on a scrub board, pumping
water and more.

Teachers/Chaperones will be provided with a map listing of all activities
taking place.

Grade Four Threshing Demonstration
Overview: More
than 3000 students attend the annual Grade Four Threshing Demonstration at the
Saskatoon
WDM. The event, in its 36th year, recreates harvests of years
gone by, with a focus on highlighting the progression of harvesting methods over
time.

Wheels and Runners
Overview:
“Wheels & Runners” is a two hour teacher-led education program
based on the theme: transportation has played important roles in the
development of Saskatchewan communities. Students will interact with
transportation related artifacts, take part in a story, make a take-home
craft, and tour the museum.

Giddy-Up and Whoa Program for Preschools
Overview: Giddy-up and Whoa is a preschool program
developed to teach children about horses, how important they are to us today and
especially to people of long ago. Children enjoy a horse and wagon ride, a
tour of the WDM's barn and the opportunity to interact with a variety of farm
animals. Information for the spring session
will be sent to Preschools in late March.

Christmas Programming 2009

A Christmas Long Ago (Kindergarten)
Overview:
A teacher-led program for kindergarten students which provides students the
opportunity to learn some of the ways of the festive season during pioneer
times. The teacher is provided with a written storyline for the story
session. The story, as it is told to the children, will be accompanied
by a series of slides and specific artifacts along with an explanation and
directions. As well, students may place some old-fashioned decorations
on the tree and/or look at some old-fashioned gifts handled by the
teacher.

Toys of Yesteryear (Grade 1)
Overview: The Toys of Yesteryear program
for grade one students is held in the school on 1910 Boomtown Street, and
led by Museum staff. While children sit in old-fashioned desks they will
share in the experience of listening to a story and seeing a variety of
"Toys of Yesteryear".

Christmas 1910 (Grade 3)
Overview: Christmas 1910 is a guided program for grade three students. Students
shop on Boomtown Street with an imaginary dollar, construct a seasonal craft
and tour the Eaton's Once Upon A Christmas exhibit.

Self-Guided Visits
Self-guided visits to the Saskatoon WDM can also be arranged during the Christmas season. The Museum is a magical place during the holidays with the Eaton's Once Upon A Christmas exhibit and all of the winter decorations adorning Boomtown. Pre-booking is required.
