The main focus of the Boomtown Volunteers
Association is to make the Western Development Museum alive with
people in period costume rather than a mere display of artifacts. We
conduct group tours on request. We act as interpreters dressed in
period costume in various buildings on special occasions throughout
the year. Sundays we serve as hosts on Boomtown street.
We maintain a library as well as archives in the Volunteer Centre. All volunteers are welcome to browse or borrow from our library.
We assist with Grade 4 Threshing Demonstrations, Heritage Fair, Museum Days, Mothers’ Day Tea, Pion-Era, Boo Town, Christmas 1910 and the Christmas Craft Fair. We keep the map display up-to-date that shows from where visitors to our Museum come. Assisting WDM staff with the mailing of the WDM newsletter "Sparks off the Anvil" was started in 1977 and continues to this day.
The first regular meeting of our group took place in May 1973. Since that day we have contributed to our museum to the tune of over $65,000. Today our main fund raising activity is our participation in regular flea markets organized by the Pioneer Threshermen’s Club.
We have ten monthly meetings per year where we hear reports from seven committees: archives, benevolence, library, membership, phoning and lunch, projects and social. We end our meetings with some light entertainment and a light snack.
New members are always welcome.
