2SLGBTQ+ Seniors: Storytelling on the Prairies Portrait Exhibit

Moose Jaw

May 13, 2024 - July 14, 2024

For most of the 20th century, 2SLGBTQ+ people in Saskatchewan remained closeted, living in fear of societal discrimination and laws designed to criminalize them and their partners. Living through this time on the prairies presented many difficulties and painful challenges but also joys. In 2022, 12 Indigenous and non-Indigenous 2SLGBTQ+ seniors (55+) generously shared their life stories in an oral history project with the WDM.

From stories of coming out, falling in love, heartache and loss, work, travel, family, leisure and activism, to contemporary concerns about elder care, aging and safe housing, we invite you to connect with their powerful and thoughtful voices in this portrait exhibit.
