Celebrate Christmas Past – In-Museum Program

Two early 1900s era Christmas cards. The first features Santa Claus in his sleigh with the words "A visit from Santa Claus." The second features Santa Clause bending over to pick up a big sack, smoking his pipe and the words "Christmas Blossoms."

Delight in the magic of Christmas as you lead your students on Christmas-themed gallery scavenger hunt through the Museum galleries, create a festive craft, hop on a wagon ride, and enjoy a take-home treat bag.

All school groups, educators and chaperones must follow COVID-19 guidelines as stated by the Saskatchewan Health Authority. This includes indoor mask mandates and proof of vaccination for anyone participating in the program ages 12+.

Program Type

Teacher Led Program led by a teacher, with guidance from Museum staff.

Imagine a sleigh ride dashing through the snow, the smell of fresh gingerbread coming from a hot oven or a twinkling handmade star ornament on a Christmas tree. In this program, students will learn how settlers and their families celebrated the holidays in Saskatchewan more than 100 years ago with activities inspired from the WDM Yorkton Collection. Students will learn historical holiday traditions and while doing so, may even recognize a few traditions celebrated today that have been passed down through generations.

This is a teacher-led program with three half-hour segments. Students rotate through three activities:

  • A craft session for your grade (Pre-K, Grade 1-3 and Grade 4-6)
  • A Christmas-themed gallery scavenger hunt
  • Tractor-drawn wagon ride around WDM grounds
