Moose Jaw

Red River Cart

In 2017, the WDM Moose Jaw connected with New Southern Plains Métis Local #160 (NSPML) – an organization whose focus is to promote awareness of the Métis community in Moose Jaw and area. Since then, NSPML has participated in the WDM’s Community Heritage Day and Museum Day as well as helping to develop a Michif word seek and find activity.

While working together, the WDM and NSPML identified the need for a full-size Red River cart at the WDM Moose Jaw. A dedicated group of volunteers from NSPML have built a replica cart for the WDM, with the WDM covering the cost of materials and the NSPML volunteers donating their time and expertise. In collaboration with Gabriel Dumont Institute, the WDM created interpretive signage for the display which will go on permanent exhibit starting July 19. Thank you to all of the volunteers from NSPML for their support of this project and the WDM!

This important addition reflects our commitment to telling more inclusive and diverse stories, and ensuring that all who visit feel a sense of representation and belonging.
