A curator leans over a penguin. This is not a toy; it is an artifact.
Its paint is worn in places. A crack runs along one side. Before it can ever be displayed, careful hands must assess it, clean it, stabilize it and document it.
Behind every artifact are hundreds of hours of work:
Collecting, cataloguing, conserving, documenting, researching, storing and preparing objects so their stories can be safely and accurately shared.
And the scale of this responsibility is extraordinary.
What is on display represents only a small portion of the Western Development Museum’s collection. The rest, thousands of artifacts, are carefully organized and protected, waiting for their turn to be researched, preserved and interpreted.
This work does not begin and end with an exhibit opening. It is meticulous, important and it never stops.
More artifacts are waiting for care than can be prioritized at once.
Some require cleaning before they can be safely handled.
Others need documentation before their stories can be told.
Environmental monitoring must happen continuously to protect against light, humidity and temperature fluctuations.
Safeguarding Saskatchewan’s heritage is not a one-time project.
It is a long-term commitment.
That is why we are inviting you to consider becoming a monthly supporter of the Western Development Museum.

Ongoing work needs ongoing support. Become a monthly supporter by filling out the form below.
A monthly gift helps ensure that the careful stewardship of our collection and the research, exhibitions and educational programs that grow from it can continue steadily throughout the year.
Whether you choose $15, $25, $50 or another amount every month, your consistent support provides stability to our ongoing work. It allows us to be proactive rather than reactive. It ensures that today’s stories will still be here for future generations to discover.
We are not done safeguarding our histories.
In many ways, we are living it right now.
One day, someone will walk through the Museum and wonder what life was like in Saskatchewan in 2026. The work we do today will shape how that story is told.
Thank you for helping safeguard it.
P.S. Every artifact you see has already undergone years of thoughtful care. Many more are still waiting. Your monthly support helps ensure that preservation, research and storytelling continue – every month of the year.
