Dr. Alfred Shadd Virtual Exhibit – Reflection Resource

September 2, 2025 – June 26, 2026

Dr. Alfred Shadd was the first documented person of African descent to live in what is now Saskatchewan. The WDM has developed an exhibit in partnership with the Melfort and District Museum and the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum honouring him and his legacy. Students will explore the Dr. Alfred Schmitz Shadd virtual exhibit before completing a set of reflection questions.

Wartime Rationing Activity Sheet

During the First and Second World Wars, Canadians were asked to make do with less to allow more resources to be sent to troops overseas. During the Second World War, to make sure no one used too much of certain foods, people were issued food ration books. This activity sheet explains ration books, how they were used, and gives a recipe for chocolate cake that could be made within the ration limits. This resource is available in English and French below.

Virtual One Room, Many Lessons School Program

September 2, 2025 – June 26, 2026

One Room, Many Lessons builds critical thinking and analytical skills by inviting students to identify key characteristics of their classroom or school and then compare them with characteristics of a rural one room schoolhouse attended by settler children in 1910. The central component of the program is a self-navigated virtual tour with video clips of the One Room Schoolhouse exhibit on Boomtown Street at WDM Saskatoon.

Virtual Our Collective Threads School Program

September 2, 2025 – June 26, 2026

The clothes we wear offer clues to who we are and where we come from. Students will examine a selection of textiles reflecting the diversity of Saskatchewan’s people past and present and then think about how their own clothing choices reflect aspects of their identify. They will be challenged to think critically about the exhibit creation process, what impacts decisions about what is or isn’t included, and what that means for how history is presented to the public by museums.

Virtual Christmas Past and Present Program

Through this virtual program, we provide an opportunity for students to learn about 1910 settler life and, in particular, about family traditions during the Christmas season in rural Saskatchewan.
